Quiet and Concerned with Provenance

Around the room, the names I did not know

grew into their faces like the flies.

The names, the faces grew like the flies, so

I grew too. Buzz was my new sound. My eyes

magnified, scraped to insomnia glass,

I went to the pitiless father and son

who froze the water into place,

whose boredom melted it down.

I’m asking, I said, for a little time.

I’ll pay what I owe, just let me stay

a moment in the sun, correct my rhyme,

collect my mind, and take my leave of the day.

It struck me then I wouldn’t speak again,

no one would, except the endless rain.
